How Hot is Too Hot in Gas Chromatography?

The maximum temperature of a GC column depends on its stationary phase, film thickness, and manufacturer’s specifications. Polar columns are generally more susceptible to thermal degradation, which can lead to excessive column bleed, peak tailing, and reduced separation efficiency.

To ensure optimal performance and extend column life, always operate within the recommended temperature limits and use high-temperature-compatible accessories. Proper gas management is also essential to prevent oxygen and other contaminants from damaging the column, especially at elevated temperatures
